Wildlife Viewing

Presque Isle County in northeastern Michigan in the American Midwest is an oasis of untouched wilderness, filled with a wide variety of wildlife. As you wander through the 660 square miles of land, you will spot magnificent black bear, deer and wild turkeys around the crystal clear lakes and forests.

Due to the number of animals that can be found in Presque Isle County, there is an exciting gaming and hunting season where you can take part in archery, trapping, muzzle loading and rifle shooting. Popular species for hunting here include grouse, rabbits, elk and even mink. Alternatively, you can enjoy simply watching the abundant wildlife in their natural habitat.

Presque Isle County sits on the shores of the beautiful Lake Huron that is a rich habitat for many species of fish. In total, there are over a hundred inland lakes in this county. The largest is the magnificent Grand Lake, which covers a massive 5,700 acres of space. As well as being a wonderful location for walking and hiking, these lakes are great places for fishing. You can catch bass, pan fish and pike amongst others in the crystal clear waters here, either fishing from the shore or from one of the many boats that you can hire nearby.

In addition, there are a huge number of rivers and streams in Presque Isle County that feed these lakes. These make excellent locations from which to catch trout and salmon and steelhead fish. The quality and quantity of the freshwater fish here makes it a popular location for even the most discerning angler.

The shoreline in this beautiful part of Michigan is also home to a large number of bird species. There are several hides from which you can discover waterfowls and shore birds, such as nestling Loons.. Throughout the forest you can also spot the rare Piping Plover and you may even be lucky enough to spot a bald eagle swooping majestically overhead.

In the colder months, ice fishing on these lakes is a real treat. While you enjoy the winter wonderland around you and the wonder wildlife, you can catch pike, perch and walleye like a true `hard water fisherman`.

The beautiful changing scenery of Presque Isle County is the perfect location to capture some stunning landscape photographs, as a souvenir of your stay. Whether it is a tumbling waterfall, historic lighthouse or a wildlife shot, it will have pride of place in your home when you return, where you can enjoy it from the comfort of your quality Berkline furniture.
